PAYCHECK PANIC

Recently [well, really a discussion that has been going on for awhile, and will continue to] a lot of discussion over the paychecks to staff [primarily grounds, maintenance, housekeeping, etc.] faculty and administrators.  Just gonna post some of the information/emails and not actually comment on it via it is a difficult situation.

Here is a Point News Article Terrorist newspaper article about the increase to administrative salaries of 15 administrators which Dr. Urgo later pointed out was semi inaccurate via there were increases to staff and faculty salaries as well (see email below).

It is particularly distressing to me to face external limitations on employee eligibility for salary increases. We will continue to work with legislators in Annapolis to broaden eligibility, and ultimately, to see an end to the state wage freeze.

This year, despite the state wage freeze, we have been able to work within state guidelines to make a number of salary increases effective in January 2012.

Scheduled January 2012 Increases:

Faculty – 58
23 Assistant Professors
22 Associate Professors
13 Professors

Also, in January 2011, 40 tenure-track, assistant professors received increases.

Faculty adjustments listed here do not include salary increases that come as a result of promotions, tenure, and periodic reviews. Over 50 faculty members received this category of salary increase in 2011. Others are eligible for these increases in 2012.

Faculty Librarians – 2

Staff – 18
4 Athletics
4 President’s Cabinet
2 Business Office
2 Campus Technology Support Services
1 Academic Services
1 Advancement
1 Facilities
1 Financial Aid
1 Registrar’s Office
1 Waterfront

The student newspaper has a story this week with partial information about salaries on campus that I and others have found to be misleading, and unfortunate. I intend this email to help us all understand the issues we face regarding salary increases, and the progress we’ve made within state limitations. I am happy to meet with anyone, singly or in groups, to discuss the situation and the decisions we’ve implemented.

Joseph Urgo
President
St. Mary's College of Maryland

Only comment here that I want to make is that while positions such as athletics, president's cabinet, CTSS, and the various offices, none of these (other than the one facilities pay increase, which I could guess may have gone to Kevin Mercer [bless his soul, beautiful man]) are going towards the staff that the students are concerned about, those working for low(ish) hourly wages.

So, there are some facts about this, primarily for the alumni readers.  Check out the article's comments, especially the 4chan troll, along with some insightful commentary.

Oh and there was a reply to the Urgo all student email from above:

I agree with President Urgo’s statement that The Point News article is not totally accurate, but I disagree that it is “misleading” and “unfortunate.”  The salient message of the article is that the most poorly paid employees at SMCM are not getting raises.   In this message, the article is accurate, and tells a story that needs to be told.

Matthew (25:29) said it millennia ago:

For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.

So, how do we solve this problem within the constraints of the State’s mandate?  We have efforts under way to establish a Joe Carroll Staff Award, with a 1 of 1 match for an unnamed donor.  If you haven’t already contributed to that fund and can afford it, do so.  Your $1 is worth $2.

But a once-a-year fund will not solve an endemic problem.

The Point News article mentioned support for establishing “a fund to reserve money until it would be legal to disperse among the staff.”  I, and I am sure many others, call on the President and other “operationally critical staff” to explore this and other creative solutions.  Let’s all be part of the solution, not the problem.

Not sure that we needed the religious quote, but it does bring up the issue of 'rich get richer, poor get poorer' along with other good points.  Hope this educated yall to some degree, please leave comments if I missed anything or am wrong about anything or if I am still unfunny etc. thank you

Fundraiser to Benefit SMCM Staff TONIGHT

Check out this event to benefit SMCM staff  http://www.facebook.com/events/105929422856137/  on the facebook.

Come to DPC at 5PM for a Holiday Dessert Party to raise money for staff bonuses (via they need more money) through donations that you can give at the event.  There will also be desserts to eat.  Also donate money.

Also there will be raffles for Campus Store gift cards and other rad stuff.

So check it out and support our staff (grounds, housekeeping, maintenance, and other staffs) with this event.

Changing Face of Route 5

Check out this wonderful image longtime reader "KC" dug up recently.  The top image is from awhile ago when SMCM was St. Mary's Female Seminary, while the bottom image was taken within the past year.  Look at all the foliage/land/lack of erosion/lower water levels on the top image!  What a difference a few decades can make [actually upon closer inspection it is hard to determine where exactly on Route 5 the top photo was taken, it looks like it was taken closer to the area where the River Center currently is, so this may be more indicative of the land there, but I think there was still a lot more land here than there is today].

Cool stuff.  I found some nice photos that indicate the massive erosion at The Point [which I may have posted already???] that I will post at some point.

Awesome/Shitty

For awhile now I have included the option for readers to mark each post as being either 'awesome' or 'shitty' and I am always pleased/surprised when people actually mark them.  luv yall.

PANIC: Great Room Planning to Serve Blood

PANIC:  It would appear that the Great Room is going to be serving blood today.  I am not sure what else they could mean by food that is inspired by the series Twilight.

Yes, the Great Room is literally serving Twilight inspired food today.  Not sure how I feel about this.  Mostly feel that this is dumb, but also it is sort of a cute idea.  If they had done Star War Saturday then I would have thought this was awesome.  I just don't understand what they could serve other than blood via vampires eat blood.

Also, does anyone else love the Blade movies?  Best vampire movies.

Also, thanks to Hannah B for finding this GEM.

Are you drunk Heron?  Is that why you are standing on one leg?  In the middle of WC?  You need to sober up and get your life together,  Get back in the fish-eating game.  Goodness.

PANIC: Students Attacking Faculty Vis-A-Vis Bicycles and Skateboards

St. Mary's City:  News reports are flooding in of students on bicycles and skateboards violently attacking faculty and staff at St. Mary's College of Maryland.  Recently the Director of Public Safety, David Zylak, AKA "Zylak Bro," sent out an email expressing the concerns of several faculty members that they are being targeted by gangs of students dressed with little regard for safety or the well-being of "the olds."  The initial email can be read below (click for big, duh):

As you can see, students need to wear bright clothes in order to not harm faculty members when jogging or biking.  Note the concern of some faculty:

SERIOUS ISSUES YALL.

Safety is a legit issue though.  I bike a lot and even though it's fun to ride through red lights and stop signs if there are other cars around you should seriously stop.  Those are the sorts of things that make drivers hate bikers.

Does anyone else remember Aime M?

Lols vis-a-vis "I cannot loose"(sic).

PANIC! Daily Grind has run out of Ice Cream

Recently I went to the Daily Grind and there was no ice cream.  PANIC!  However, I then noticed a sign explaining the situation:

As you can see, the Daily Grind is merely hiding their ice cream for some reason.

Except, there is clearly ice cream in the freezer.

I don't really understand it.

Crisis averted?

Senseless Acts of Destruction

Zylak bro (vis-a-vis new head of Public Safety) sent out an email about some lame-os vandalizing Prince George (the purest of all resident halls) and some cars in Lot R.  Lame stuff vis-a-vis vandalism is really annoying and makes the campus less pretty and costs money.  Sigh.

Kinda chill that he did not immediately blame students (although vandalism on campus is often caused by students, and I would assume that this was the case here) and was open to the possibility that other people did this.

Not much to say, don't put your energy into breaking stuff, it's lame and really upsetting :/

PANIC! Cookie!

Longtime blog lover and fellow History club officer [NAME REDACTED (via I don't think she wants her name here)] recently made this delightful Halloween cookie!  Inspired by the blog obvs.

These are great cookies vis-a-vis they are ghosts and they say PANIC and ghosts are scary.  It's called Honors College Logic.  [I may want to start making posts about #honorscollegelogic wherein I make posts about things that the school does that is funny, like the Mold Ship or proposing a footbridge over route 5.  Yall are getting a look into a blogger's mind].

This wonderful alumnus also sent me this mug:

This mug is great vis-a-vis it has LEGO on it, and my name is Shelby!

Have a great November Yall.

Mold Students to be placed on a Cruise Ship EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS

I wish this were a joke that I had made up but it is not.  The school is renting (or maybe buying via the photo to the right) this ship to house students who have been displaced by the mold in PG and Caroline.

These photos were leaked to me by a disgruntled student (she wasn't actually disgruntled) and should be the legit thing.

According to this second photo, it would appear that the boat will house at least 218 students.  Not sure how many are currently in the hotels, but there are many more than 200 students currently displaced (many were put into triples, quads, etc.).  I wonder how effective this method of housing will be?

Here is what the cabins look like.  As you can see they have a nice framed painting and even a telephone.  Not sure how the telephone works since they are in the water.

 Wow boat, u fancy huh?
Nice deck!  For yalls who aren't getting all student emails, Urgo sent one out a few hours ago telling everyone about this.  Currently a lot of students are in hotels in the area (some even in Solomons) which kinda sucks via having to drive so much, so this is a new solution!

I feel like this is the sort of solution that could not have been imagined by sober people.
Click on any of the photos to see them bigger!

I have been here for several years now, nearly half a decade, and this is THE most absurd thing I have experienced.  <3 u st. marys.

PANIC! SCHOOL GOING TO SHUT DOWN

Via mold everywhere.  Apparently there is mold everywhere right now.  There is also a cool rumor about the school shutting down.  I hope this is one of those unsubstantiated rumors.  I also wish I had started it.  Sigh.

PANIC: Tapestries Removed From Campus Store

PANIC!! It would appear that the tapestries have been removed from the Campus Center Store.  These essential tapestries have been replaced with INSTRUMENTS.

I think we can all agree that while music is an essential part of the college life (via student bands [Three Man River Band, that ska band that played once and I wish would play more, Byzantine Top 40, Hydrofish, Slyfoxed] and that guy who shows up to parties with a guitar and kinda annoys everyone) tapestries are much more important.

Where would we be if everyone did not have a Bob Marley or Grateful Dead tapestry?  I know that my townhouse last year had both, along with approximately five other tapestries (not at all a joke).  How are we supposed to have the generic college experience if we are deprived of our stereotypical tapestries???

Granted, I may be jumping to conclusions, and they may have tapestries somewhere else in the Campus Store, but WHO KNOWS (via I am not good at investigative journalism when I live several miles away).

THIS IS A TAPESTRY TRAVESTY

It's an Honors College Because

One year after a major mold outbreak there are still even bigger mold outbreaks.

A ~Model~ Goes to School Here Now

Via many many rumors it would appear that a Model (via fashion modeling) attends SMCM.  At most universities this is probably a common occurrence but here it is something to speculate about and objectify the human in question.

Via investigative journalism it would appear that Blaine Cook (wut a pretty name!) is from Hollywood, MD and was born in 1986.  Let the stalking commence!

Pretty!

WAT.  What a turncoat/Benedict Arnold, doing work for the college Franklin and Marshall (via that place is hella expensive).

He was also in the 2009 American Eagle Holiday catalog.  I think this is one of those catalogs where people get kinda nudey, but it would appear

Episode II: The Community Strikes Back

Title not super relevant to the content, I just love Star Wars.

This is part two OF THREE PARTS of the forum stuff regarding Chick-Fil-A.  Click on images to view them bros.

Ah yes, thank you for your valuable insight into what food you enjoy!

1.  This guy is saying that people attempted to force his daughter into lesbianism.  What.
2.  Are there any small liberal arts colleges that don't have a liberal slant?  It's in the name!
3.  I really want to understand how people attempted to force his daughter to be a lesbian.

Aw this guy brings up a good point.

Look at terrorist Dave Chase winning the hearts and minds of our community via not acting like an asshole!  This bro is a real good debater/talkerman.

These guys really don't like Muslims.

That's all for today, look forward to more excerpts probably.  Or don't look forward to it, if it's not your cup of tea.

Drama

This week is tech weekend for the play 'As you like it' which I didn't realize was a Shakespeare play.  Also apparently tech week is a horrible thing, I don't know.  Anyways, goodluck yall.

The Chick-Fil-A Debate Reaches SOMD.com

Not sure if yall know about the wonderful website known as SOMD.com.  Most geographic areas don't have sweetass websites with news, forums, etc., but Southern Maryland sure does!  If you enjoy Conservative rhetoric, Obama bashing, and townies posting pictures from May Day (yes, this has happened) then COME ON DOWN!

So, months after Chick-Fil-A was banished via supporting anti-gay groups some people on the SOMD site got upset.  Since they go here and everything.  It resulted in some interesting posts on their forum and terrorist Dave Chase being a sane person with legitimately good posts.  This will be the first of two posts.  Click on the images to see the posts in full size that will actually be legible.  And godbless yall real good (via signs on route 4).

Ah yes, as a liberal lefty I HATE family values and the like.  I believe we should all live in communes!

Not sure if this bro understands what censorship is....

I would recommend just reading this one yourself.  There is homophobia, Islamophobia, and other crazyness.

Someone more sane posts!

Yes, please do come take a shit here on campus, we would love that.

MORE NEXT TIME!
