Couch Creatures

The school often uses this image of the Couch Creatures in promotional stuff, but kinda annoyed that the group hasn't existed for a few years (I don't think it's been a thing since I've been here).  I mean, people take blankets to games and sit on the track, but I haven't seen a huge gathering with couches and 'couch creatures' shirts ever, other than this photo (photo being the one in the upper right, you probably saw it at some point during the admissions process).

Or maybe I'm wrong, can anyone confirm deny?  I've only been to about a dozen games on the Varsity Field so I could be wrong.

  1. I doubt anyone still does it, because sadly all the crazy hippies are gone and my beloved SMCM has turned into a school for preppy kids. My friend (an alum) visited a few weeks ago...she said that not a single person on the path said hi to her. Sad.

  2. they weren't here since I can remember either. I think we saw the last remnant of true hippies leave just around your sophomore year. when you think about it, it's really sad. maybe we should stop thinking about it. :(

  3. All the talk I hear of how lame this school has gotten since the "true hippies" left is offensive to me as a person who still goes here and doesn't suck.

  4. Well Ken, if more people like you went to games then maybe this would happen again.

  5. I don't think it's that simple though, we need people/sports admins to organize this sort of thing.

Also I think reslife is anti taking couches to the track, so that is another anti thing

  6. Hippies weren't the same people as the sports fans who watches sports games.....
Also, yea since FA2006 I have never seen anyone pull their couch out to watch any of the soccer or whatever games...

  8. It's not necessarily the "lack of true hippies", but also the increase in the iron fist of the school. Increased regulations and penalties are forcing students to become "less fun" for fear of severe consequences for things that seem minor offences.

Also, hippie is as hippie does. What the hell is a "true hippie" and why does that determine how awesome our school is?

  9. kratt's creatures should come back too.
(show of childhood on pbs about 2 brothers and a lemur, later became "zaboomafoo"; did others experience this?)

  13. I go to umd, but I gotta say, I wish Maryland was even 1/4 as awesome as smcm, if only they had my major...

  15. To regain the favor of the internet, I will agree with everyone.

No, really, I do. I didn't mean to say that hippies were the reason this school was awesome (and it still is stellar). I'd like to think, though, that they were an indicator of the state of the school's cultural health. It seems like smcm is moving away from being a home for eccentrics of all types, classes, and body hygiene rituals, and trying to fit into a more "mainstream" image of the student body (whatever mainstream means). I won't try and guess why this is happening though, because I don't know why anyone would try to shake a reputation like ours. And person that was offended, I am sorry. You still go there and you have the power to keep st. mary's weirdly sweet. I envy you.
I also agree with Anonymous (lol?) in that the admins have gotten super uptight about a great deal of very minor things. Dear powers that be: lighten up.
