New Carpets in the Library

Library got new carpet!  I generally avoid the library (via avoiding work) so I only knew about this since I had to go to the faculty senate meeting this week (which is held in the library in a fancy room on the 2nd floor).  Library has a weird smell now, but the carpet is pretty.

Hope no one spills coffee/liquor on it.

  1. Libraries always smell like knowledge, I hate it...

  2. Yes, please take care of the carpets. Also, tell people to stop writing graffiti on the bathroom stalls - it costs a lot of money to keep repainting them.

  3. So stop repainting them! They look much better with the graffiti.

  5. Honestly, they look cheap and trashy covered in graffiti. And remember, the Library is a "showcase" building, so a lot of tours, parents, prospective students, guests, community members, donors, important VIPs, Board members, etc. go there and spend time there. It's also one of the very few places on campus that's open late and on weekends, and if the vandalism (yes, it's vandalism) keeps up, that might have to change. Finally, it's going to keep getting painted over by the powers that be, and all that does is constantly cost money that could go back into your education.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant, but it's getting waaaaay out of hand this year.

ugh there was more to it, but this was in AA hall for a long time, and if you knew Paul, you know this is exactly the sort of thing he would do.

  8. They won't close the library early because people are writing on the bathroom walls. Besides, plenty of people need to take dumps during the day too.

  9. Actually the staff is actively tracking when it's being done.

  10. to be honest if people are coming to smcm because of the cliche, self-indulgent, privileged, narcissistic writing on the bathroom walls...they should go somewhere else. or maybe they should go to st marys because it would be perfect for them lawl

I'd go here because of the signs celia put up. she is so baller. I kind of want to go talk to her. she gets who I ammm.

like, there are plenty of other places for your ~~*~creative expression~~*~, like on bulletin boards in dorms or writing poems or actually doing something like going to a club or having friends or going to a therapist...that aren't destructive and shallow and ultimately totally trite and meaningless JUST SAYIN

  11. or writin anonymous blog comments that are mean and passive aggressive (same writer as before, realizing the depths of my own hypocrisy, tear)

  12. Ha. Lol same writer as before. This is not you (by the way), to anyone who may suspect that. This is me, and you are funny.

  13. As a senior, I think it's pretty cool to see how the walls have changed over the years. Also, I see both points. Some of the material could be taken as rude or graphic or even disturbing and it is, as previously mentioned, in a place (I'm focusing solely on the library) frequented by tours and some parents or donors might see it as in poor taste. On the other hand, The bathrooms are a public-private place which allows for the privacy of revealing information to an unknown public which can be very therapeutic. Personally, I have written some stuff on the first girly stall and the act of writing it, and visiting it over again through the years has helped me a lot.

Also, to the 2/1/11 12:51 writer, sometimes writing poems, going to clubs, having friends or even seeing a therapist doesn't help. Also also, obviously if it continuously occurs, it must not be meaningless. Please do not make such harsh comments. Those words mean a lot to a lot of people.

  14. Not only was the graffiti VERY excessive last year for some reason, some of it got very personal and borderline threatening (i.e., names of specific students and some highly offensive things said about them, and obviously not meant in jest). Those had to come down.

Regardless of the merits for and against, they're going to have to be cleaned and painted every time this happens, which just costs time and money, so ultimately it's not worth it. HOWEVER, Celia has said she's willing to talk to students about other options if they have really strong opinions about this - of course, that means outing yourself as a tagger to her, but she doesn't care, she just wants the vandalism to stop.

hey, it's cool to be able to talk about this. The Point should do an article about it. :)

  15. The point is run by communists, I'll do an article on it

  16. How in the world could a small peninsula that is often full of trash write an article?

  17. If the secret sharing walls of the bathrooms need to go, so do the paintings of vaginas up the stairs to the great room, which are a DEFINITE route for tours.

Personally, I like them both, though.

  18. Which is* a def route.

    Whoops.
