SGA Meeting 11/3/09

SGA Meeting this week is gonna be super short

8:07 - Meeting has begun

8:15 - A guy (not Guy) is here talking about his SMP for student speakout. I don't care. This kid is really awkward. Okay he has given up on explaining his SMP because he isn't really sure. Okay now he is again trying again to explain it. Something about restoring a barn in historic and doing stuff with it. I think he is asking us money. Fuck this shit. I don't care about barns.

8:22 - blah blah blah, I don't see why the SGA should fund this.

8:25 - What the fuck he wants 20k from us to make this barn. I don't see how this shit will benefit students, or why students would want their money going towards this.

EDIT: Guy Kilpatric responds to defend the barn! He makes some excellent points.
The reason the barn is important, is because it is one of few remaining nineteenth-century tobacco barns. It's a lasting remnant of pre-modernized St. Mary's County. I think it's relationship to St. Mary's College is tied to the land. Which is another important reason for the barn's restoration.

Martin probably mentioned the potentiality of initiating a campus farm in conjunction with the use of the restored barn. Starting a campus farm at St. Mary's College would be an important step toward the College's goal of sustainability. There are a few different organizations coming from the position that this would be a good thing. As president of the Community Garden Club, I too support this, and I am working closely with Martin and others to accomplish this project within the best interests of the students, the college, and the surrounding community. I believe the barn is a great opportunity for the students to explore our local geography and culture.

8:30 - Tess Wier is here to talk about the Anti-Vandalism march.

8:32 - Marlena is here to talk about the First Responders Network. They try to stop sexual assault, woo! You should add 301-904-2015 to your phone, because this is their number you can call 24/7 for advice and help and such about sexual assault.

8:35 - 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be sexually assaulted. Also 75%+ rapes are date rapes, so watch your dranks!

8:38 - Holy shit, when Marlena makes percentage signs, she uses dots instead of circles!

8:40 - Most common date rape drug is...alcohol! This makes a lot of sense. You really should make sure you don't drink too much and stuff. Like, I think trying to keep track of how many units of alcohol you have consumed is difficult, but a great way to avoid puking and rape and hangovers.

EDIT: I would like to say that rape is never the victims fault. Never

8:56 - People complaining about the soda and snack machines not working.

9:00 - Holy shit Dean Bayless just said Grab and Go might get closed

9:01 - What the fuck are Night Hawks. Some program where students went on patrol.

Meeting over!

  2. Yeah I heard that somebody attempted to break into the Grab and Go fridge, and then the place got trashed during Hallowgreens. We're already banned from using the LQ kitchen. Boooooo :-(

  4. Hey, first it was Martin who was talking about his SMP.

Second, the reason the barn is important, is because it is one of few remaining nineteenth-century tobacco barns. It's a lasting remnant of pre-modernized St. Mary's County. I think it's relationship to St. Mary's College is tied to the land. Which is another important reason for the barn's restoration.

  5. I agree with Margo on the whole grab-and-go thing.

  6. Look at Guy saying all this very reasonable stuff that I find myself agreeing with, instead of being upset over the Grab and Go like everyone else.

For real though I think that it's a really cool idea, but it's also a lot to ask of the SGA. I do hope that something comes of this. Also, Justin Perry mentioned that the state legislature is very much pro-historic, and just put aside a lot of money for restructuring the visitor's center, and so this might be something they would be interested in.

  7. I never eat at Grab and Go. Not since like 3 years ago. I prefer the freshly of a mess of chicken eggs and greens, homegrown and smothered in Love. YOU CAN HAVE THAT TOO IF YOU SUPPORT A CAMPUS FARM!

Imagine this: The Grab and Go becomes a market for the Campus Farm. You can get fresh vegetables and packs of eggs OR you can do it Grab and Go style by picking up a sandwich prepared with said fresh ingredients. Wouldn't that be more satisfying than two pieces of white bread and a Kraft single?

  8. I want food smothered in love :3
They have veggie wraps at the grab and go now, they are delicious (but probably lacking love)

  9. 20k for a barn...might we consider what else we can do with 20k? And not to be cynical, but this idea for a fresh market being implemented instead, not likely.

  10. "Most common date rape drug is...alcohol! This makes a lot of sense. You really should make sure you don't drink too much and stuff. Like, I think trying to keep track of how many units of alcohol you have consumed is difficult, but a great way to avoid puking and rape and hangovers."

How eloquent. That's a disgusting way of putting it. Frightening how much emphasis is put on what the victim can do to prevent rape, as if all culpability resides with the victim.
OR, one person could be a decent human being and decide not to overpower another and exert their dominance in a sexually violent way.

And as if it's that easy...
And seriously, you're grouping rape in with puking and hangovers?

"Which of the following does not belong: hangovers, puking, rape?"

    gag.

  11. :/ I'm sorry you took it that way, but I think you are taking this way too seriously. I don't mean rape, I mean the blog itself.

Of course rape is never the victims fault, and you are definitely right that grouping rape with alcohol poisoning is wrong and horrible. I guess I was just trying to say that overdrinking is always a bad idea.

I think you have real point I didn't take this issue very seriously when I was writing this, but it's also not a really serious blog. I mean look at the title of it.

Also, I was just writing down what the first responder's network was saying about sexual assault, that alcohol is the most common date rape drug.

Anonymous you should email me about this because I'd really like to write a more serious post about sexual assault with your input, because it is a serious issue, even if some people don't think that it's a problem on campus (hint: it is).

  13. By having people aware of the things that they can do to protect themselves from rape is NOT saying that they are responsible if they do not follow that advice and are raped.

It's sort of like someone getting robbed when their door was unlocked. Had they locked the door, it's less likely that that would have happened, but that does NOT make it their fault if someone DID.

That being said: Yeah, I don't think Ken's blog is to be taken so seriously.

  14. I love the Grab n Go. :( Except recently they haven't had any food. Like... no food. At all. Except salads.

Those veggie wraps are the bomb diggity.

  15. I agree with what brazzandrade said

Also yeah, what is up with grab and go not having food lately? I don't think they even had a special this past wednesday.

Veggie wraps are so good, unless if they are warm or you left it out and it got warm. Maybe due to the hummus? Maybe I just don't like warm hummus
