Alumni I met

So, I went to this party with my Dad down the street (we played beer pong but lost) and the guy's son graduated SMCM in 02'.  He was around for The Greens riot and other cool stuff.

One thing he told me about was 'The Lemon', a anonymous newspaper published by two students that made fun of various professors and administrators.  Anyway, according to his story, eventually they figured out who was publishing it, and Goldwater/J Board had them expelled, until the students took the story to the press, and then they were unexpelled.  We were both pretty drunk so portions of the story may have been embellished a bit or slightly inaccurate, but it was an interesting event.  His name was Jay or Jason or somesuch.

Oh and he also informed me that people used the moniker 'Joanne Bongwater' back then as well.

  3. My general understanding is something like, partying going on on the greens, sheriff shows up (for some reason) and tells everyone to pour out drinks etc., but no one wants to since they all live there, so (also I was told by the alumn that Goldwater called the police, dunno how true this is) so then a helicopter shows up and a lot of police show up in rioty gear and start beating kids up etc.

Not totally accurate nor complete, someone else may have a better understanding/account of what happened.

  4. Additionally, http://voices.washingtonpost.com/college-inc/2010/04/jmu_riot_not_an_isolated_case.html The 4th or so comment is about SMCM. One thing that I've heard a lot is that students were really upset about the police showing up, and that was a large reason for the rioting etc......

  5. Hicks told us that kids were drinking outside on the greens, and PS told them to go inside, or to pour out their drinks and most of them wouldn't, so PS called the POPO and said there was a riot, and so the riot squad showed up and kids were throwing stuff at them, like rocks and what not and it sounded super intense.

Ask LHicks, it's a good story and he's a pro story teller.

  6. Yeah, I heard that story from Hicks, pretty great stuff. Goldwater needs to drink some bong water.

  7. There's a whole binder in the SGA exec board office dealing with the Riot issue. Makes for good reading. Also the minutes from Fall 2006 when the Living Wage strike was going on.

  9. Yeah I want to read that binder sometime, you told me about it a few months ago.

Jeff Faith should be back from Peace Corps, as it's been two years now. And yeah, I dunno why it always says 'her' for Jeff Faith.

We need to rekindle the Red Light District of 139. Show them its heritage.
