Harold

I didn't have a car when I showed up to St. Mary's, actually I didn't even have a license at that point. Eventually I got my license, but still being carless my junior year I found myself of legal age with a newly expired license. I didn't feel comfortable asking someone to drive me to the MVA, which was pretty far away, but moreso because of the fear of how long it could take. We had grown up seeing the horrors Patty and Selma could wreak on people... Eventually Ben took me there, but before then Harold yelled at me a lot for my expired ID (Editors note: Harold was right to yell at me). I mean it was obviously me on the ID, and I have seen plenty of people pass an ID behind themselves to the next person. So, my first impression of Harold was mixed.

But everyone liked him, and I learned to as well. Funny, kind, cheap bar tabs, everything you're looking for in a bartender. My wife and I were lucky enough to take a trip down to St. Mary's for a weekend in February of 2020. I messaged Harold and told him we'd be down, and he was kind enough to let us know he'd be working Saturday happy hour. He looked rough, really rough. I was happy to see him, but I know that for me at least it's hard to accept what your eyes are showing you. I hate knowing that everything changes and goes away eventually, whether it's the field at the Crescents or a good friend.

I'm going to miss sitting at the Door with Ben and catching Harold up on all the dumb things we had been doing. He always seemed so interested in our shenanigans, I think Harold really loved humans and our stories a lot more than most people.

I know that facebook is awful and everything but for better or worse that's the primary way I communicated with Harold, and I am going to miss all of his posts, especially the ones about bed linens and his dad.

Here are three random memories of Harold:

-harold playing clash of clans at a competitive level while bartending, and knowing that my tips would go towards that

-seeing harold in Baltimore at the alumni o's game/Pickles

-like, a lot of times when you would order your drink, I feel like he gave you a smile or a look or an eye raise that kinda said "look, everyone else in here is a drunk asshole, but right now, as you take your drink, please don't do anything to annoy me further" in the most empathetic, human way.

Raise a glass that you took home after pint night and leave some memories in the comments.

Old Image of the Green Door

You don't really know the Green Door until you've been there during the off season, or even an off day. 4pm on a Monday and everyone is watching NCIS. Random Saturdays in the summer with drunk college staff members. The drunken experience that is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Never gonna forget u, favorite bar ever.

Alumni Weekend 2013 - June 7-9

Alumni Weekend is approaching! Signups opened up for alumni who have donated (there is no threshold for the donation amount, so consider donating the cost of a few drinks at some point; it also "makes the school look better" to have a lot of donation participation), but if you are not a part of the 1% and failed to donate then you will have to wait.

But, I guess I could ~share the wealth~ and show yall the....LOGO

WOW what a pretty and cool logo! It has a sailboat! Because people at St. Mary's like to sail! For real tho I really dig the logo, and the slogan is nice too! But nothing compares to the logo from last year (via it has a frisbee)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE

As you can see, Shuttle Service to the Green Door is still being provided this year but for the EXORBITANT COST OF $7 WHICH IS $2 MORE THAN LAST YEAR. Actually this is kinda cool. Last year the bracelets sold out, so now they are raising the price due to the increased demand. ECONOMICS! But, look a little more closely...
When exactly is this shuttle? Friday or Saturday? Did some intern make this? Or could it have been newly hired Assistant director of Alumni Relations Larry Mac(Irish)Curtain.
He is good at cleaning, but is he good at creating registrations that make sense ???

Do yall wanna see the all the EXCITING REGISTRATION OPTIONS ??? Click below to read more...

PANIC: Historic St. Mary's Under Attack!

It appears that last night someone drove their vehicle into the wall outside the recreated Statehouse.  Photos below were graciously provided (AKA stolen from their facebooks) by two SMCM staff members, Tricia and Sushinsky.

Who could have done this?  I have a few possible theories:
  • The Hulk (via the Avengers)
  • The British, seeking revenge
  • A drunk driver
  • A drunk British driver (this is the most likely answer IMO)
  • Dr. Urgo on his Vespa (another likely possibility)
According to facebook comments the driver left a license plate.   At the scene of the crime.  The only way they could have been dumber is if they had left their actual license.

I don't even remember what specials the Door has on Tuesdays...so I'm not sure if people actually go there on Tuesdays, via drunk driving.

Another troubling issue is that this road isn't a real road.  It's a small offshoot of Route 5 that no one really has any reason to drive on, for the most part.  Why were they drunk driving on this road?  Did they start on this road (via someone drinking in the park/waterfront) and then try to go home?

Overall a very bizarre attack on History St. Mary's City.  Not sure why the British are still upset about this.

Wagon Wheel

It's no secret that a lot of SMCM students are obsessed with the Old Crow Medicine Show Wagon Wheel.  But why???  When did this obsession begin?  Can any alumni shed some light on how long people have had major boners for this song???

Not sure where this sign is actually located, but I stole it from someone's tumblr.  Do yall think that we should have a 'wagon wheel dr' so that students can repeatedly steal it (via students stealing that scarecrow on route 5, RIP scarebro).

I guess Wagon Wheelies has a lot of common themes like 'going South' (via most students are from the North [via goddam Yankees]) and wanting to get 'it on' with a girlie (via sex).

If yall check out Spotify there is a really sweet playlist of a bunch of Wagon Wheel covers that you can find here if yall are into that.

Do yall ever like to play this song to end the night/signal everyone to leave ur house???

Is hitchhiking 'cool' anymore?  Once I left my bicycle at the Green Door and kinda wanted to hitchhike my way there (via 2-3 miles) but ended up walking instead out of fear.

Maybe we all just wanted 2 get rocked like a waggony wheel???

Is Wagon Wheel our fight song via lack of football teams???

EDIT:  Also, that post a week or so about about cigarette buttz was supposed to have an image attached but it failed.  It was a picture of a cigarette butt holder on campus that was overflowing.

SMCM Basketball

Coach was at Door last night, mentioned that there are very tall freshmen coming to the team.  Wish I were tall via being short :/.  Could fulfill dreams of being in the NBA, slam dunking and playing with the Looney Toons (via making old cartoons relevant).  Space Jam is probably one of the finest films of the 90s.

FREE PIZZA ALERT 2/15

Do yall love pizza?  Come to DPC TODAY from 3 until 9 for pizza and to learn about closing procedures and take a boring survey.  It's hosted by ResLife!

Also, last night I came home from the Door and went into the library with my box of pizza (via I had to watch a movie for class) and I felt lots of eyes staring at me.  I'm not sure if they were staring at me with judgement (via Door pizza box) or because they wanted my pizza, but the whole process was a good decision.  Atomic Cafe was a pretty interesting movie, I would recommend watching it!

100 Days

Here it is.  100 days.  A lot of us came here three and a half years ago, and now there are only 100 days left until graduation.

Heard a rumor that drinks would be .75 cents, but this is definitely not true.  The above is the sign from last year btw.

See yall at the door.  I'm tryna go around 8... :D

Also, how do you feel about underclassmen going to 100 days?  Kinda feel like it should be a senior only event, but I wouldn't be upset if I saw underclassmen.  Last year I didn't go because I felt like it would be kinda weird.  Sophomore that I was driving with to classroom placement today said she wasn't because she isn't a senior.

But what do you guys think?  Leave a comment!

President's Happy Hour

In light of the recent announcement of the 'President's Open Hour', Dr. Jurgo has also revealed that he will be hosting a weekly 'President's Happy Hour' at the Door.

From 5-6 on Tuesdays Dr. Jurgo will host the happy hour at the Green Door, featuring a variety of Faulkner inspired drinks (since he loves Faulkner obviously).  Mint Juleps, Jack Daniels, and Southern Moonshine (note:  links explain Faulkner's penchant for the drinks).

As a result of this, SafeRide will now begin running on Tuesdays to accomodate the President's decision.

SafeRide Cancelled

Woah, so SafeRide sent out an email this afternoon saying that they'd be running, and at 7:30 they cancel it? What happens to the people who already left, or more importantly, those who left without checking their email after 7:30? They're probably counting on SafeRide, and with so many cars already snowed in, it might be hard for them to find a DD when they realize SafeRide isn't running.

I guess they have their reasons for canceling, but I hope no one is put in a bad situation because of this. And I guess it's only a two-ish mile walk back, but it is pretty cold outside. I'm just glad I didn't go tonight.

21

21 now. Fuck yeahhhhhh. Anyone going to the Door for Taco Night?

Update: First shot as a 21 year old was NyQuil. I dislike being sick.
