Old Image of the Green Door

You don't really know the Green Door until you've been there during the off season, or even an off day. 4pm on a Monday and everyone is watching NCIS. Random Saturdays in the summer with drunk college staff members. The drunken experience that is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Never gonna forget u, favorite bar ever.

Alumni Weekend

Wow yall alumni weekend in like three days...planning on leaving 'twerk' (that is what c00l kids call work) around 2:30 and then getting some 'mexican food' (aka Margaritas #its5oclocksomewhere) with some friends.

Kinda wanted to go to Cerro Grande but....apparently it's been closed

R.I.P. bb ~only the good die...young~

Luckily there are a bunch of new 'mexican' restaurants around these days #phew (more on that another time)

ANYWAY

I got a 'smart phone' now and I've been thinking about 'liveblogging' Alumni Weekend, and I would like some input from yall regarding what I should 'liveblog' about.

Here are some possible ideas:
  • People that I see
  • Interactions with faculty/staff
  • Reviews of the various events
  • Stories from talking with old people
  • A running total of the number of people I see that I have hooked up with
  • SGA Reunion
  • IDK other things
So hey this weekend there should be a lot of updates or maybe one big update that keeps growing, be sure to check it out when you are recovering from the two-day hangover Monday at 'work'. Or maybe I'll just totally forget. And leave some livebloggin suggestions in the comments kthx.

Tiki Bar

Tiki Bar opens today! Really wish I could have taken off work to be down there, I don't think I've ever actually gone to opening day but it sounds like a fun time/shitshow.

Actually the only time I've gone to Tiki Bar is sailing back home after Gov Cup. Those were easily some of the best fruity island drinks I have ever had. All were just very delicious and alcoholic.

Edit: Wow meant to post this last week but forgot?

Alumni Weekend 2013 - June 7-9

Alumni Weekend is approaching! Signups opened up for alumni who have donated (there is no threshold for the donation amount, so consider donating the cost of a few drinks at some point; it also "makes the school look better" to have a lot of donation participation), but if you are not a part of the 1% and failed to donate then you will have to wait.

But, I guess I could ~share the wealth~ and show yall the....LOGO

WOW what a pretty and cool logo! It has a sailboat! Because people at St. Mary's like to sail! For real tho I really dig the logo, and the slogan is nice too! But nothing compares to the logo from last year (via it has a frisbee)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE

As you can see, Shuttle Service to the Green Door is still being provided this year but for the EXORBITANT COST OF $7 WHICH IS $2 MORE THAN LAST YEAR. Actually this is kinda cool. Last year the bracelets sold out, so now they are raising the price due to the increased demand. ECONOMICS! But, look a little more closely...
When exactly is this shuttle? Friday or Saturday? Did some intern make this? Or could it have been newly hired Assistant director of Alumni Relations Larry Mac(Irish)Curtain.
He is good at cleaning, but is he good at creating registrations that make sense ???

Do yall wanna see the all the EXCITING REGISTRATION OPTIONS ??? Click below to read more...

Maryland Legislative Reception

St. Mary's hosted a 'legislative reception' on Tuesday ft. free booze and 'appetizers' and invited alumni, so obviously I went.

Apparently it was also a "networking" event. Apparently people wear 'suits' to "networking" events and not white oxford shirts (w/rolled up sleeves) from TJ Maxx w/a Guinness tie?
But being "gainfully" employed I was more interested in the booze and food and stories about St. Mary's from the 90s 80s etc.

RATINGS:

Booze: 8/10. Hosts brought wine (red and white) to me and made sure my glass was never empty. The wine reminded me of Franzia, which is a 10/10 in my book. Beer was limited to Heineken and Amstel. IDK why those are considered "fancy event beers" but w/e, they are pretty okay. Kristina nda disappointed in the lack of Natty Boh, via that is what a lot of 'old' (read: older than 25) people complained about.

Food: 5/10. There was some fancy "medium rare steak on a piece of bread" stuff which was rad, and a lot of cheese, but idk I was hoping for mini sandwiches or something that would become my dinner.

People: 9/10 I met famous sailor Gary Jobson and then bragged to my parents about it. Talked to Urgo, he is still an expert on Faulkner and I still don't know what a Faulkner is. Talked to Chip Jackson, still a great dude. Talked to Tom Botzman about his new job. Apparently they asked him about a blog post I made years ago calling him "cute" (I stand by that remark) during the vetting process (I learned that word on House of Cards). Since he got hired I'm assuming that it was my blog that really tipped the odds in his favor. "The SMCMLOLBLOG Bump." So, you're welcome Tom! He has high hopes for the college getting money from the state this year, I hope he is right. There were also legislators I guess?

Highlight of the night was meeting IRL Leslie Knope (via Parks and Recreation). She works for the Parks Department (specifically the bay), has blonde hair, is in her 30s, and is very happy/chipper. We got her contact info because we wanted to hang out/drink with her but then we lost it so IF YOU KNOW HER PLEASE GIVE US HER CONTACT INFO via needing to hang out with the real Leslie Knope.

Anyway, hopefully I will drunkenly run into some of those alumni at alumni weekend!

Anyway it was a great event and I got some business cards (via networking)! And gave some out to people who usually just handed them back to me.

Governor's Cup 2011

WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL (UNOFFICIAL) SOURCE FOR GOVERNOR'S CUP 2011 NEWS COVERAGE!

Yall want some LIVE COVERAGE ???  Not really sure what this site does to be honest, but check out this LIVE GPS COVERAGE WEBSITE which will provide you with coolio knowledge regarding where all the boats are.  Keep a lookout for the boat Solstice which my Dad is sailing!

Here is a photo of the course!

As you can see they have to sail a lot!  The race starts today at 3 and ends tomorrow!  Some super fast boats like the Navy duders finish at like midnight I think but most boats take significantly longer.

Significant dudes with boats in the race:
Muldoon bro - Has a boat called Donnybrook
Dad bro - Has a boat called Solstice
Navy bros - Have a hella fast boat

Stay tuned for updates about boats and alcohol and old people partying.

LQ Eatery

Have yall been to the Lewis Quad Eatery/Pub.  They serve food there!  And sometimes alcohol!  My friends and I were worried about the prices of alcohol, but it's not that bad

  • Corona (kinda ew) 1.75
  • Heineken (I like this beer because Ken is in the name) 2.50
  • Various Sam Adams's 3.00
  • Wine 3.00 (Note that a cup of wine is a small cup.  Also apparently the 'glass of wine a day' rule does not apply to pint glasses, but rather only wine glasses')
All the stuff comes from bottles (woo) but they pour it into cups (lame).  There is also food
  • Nachos 3.00 and they are delicious
  • Nachos with meat 4.50 if you are into that
  • Burrito 6.00 these were okay but I'd rather get more nachos
WHAT SHOULD IT BE NAMED?!?!

Last week they had a survey.  I liked 8th Wonder and The Pub.  Someone last week made a fake edit to the SMCM wikipedia regarding the pub and called it The Sloppy Oyster which made my roommates and myself laugh a lot.

Anyway every thursday (including today) there will be alcohol.  Hopefully professors will show up to discuss academic topics/buy us boooze.

Not much else to say, except that they really need to dim those lights.  Also there is free popcorn.

Public Safety Clery Report

Public Safety recently released their annual Clery report, which I don't know much about other than that it has lots of cool statistics.  Interesting excerpt from the part of the report that discussed Public Safety policies.
"The Director of Public Safety regularly reviews police logs and reports from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to monitor off-campus student behavior and refers those reports to both the Dean of Students and the Office of Student Conduct."
Interesting, thoughts?
Incidents can also be reported via a confidential “Silent Witness” web form.”  They used via, which makes me happy.
Interesting data from the report:
No homicide, yay!
Liquor law violations are going down.  2007 – 179, 2008 – 122, 2009 – 102.  Clearly my class (which came here in 2007) was the best/most caught drinkers.

Pitcher and Pizza

Who all is heading to PnP tonight?  See yalls there.

Solo Cups

Seems like, according to what RAs said during Townhouse meeting, that Solo Cups are a free pass for outdoor drinking.  What they told us was that they can't 'check solo cups or really know what's in them' which kinda reminds me of like, brown bagged 40s in Baltimore.  I think it's probably more than just a Baltimore thing, but I feel like it is a large part of like, Baltimore culture/heritage?  It's definitely something I'm proud of.

Anyways, maybe this is something they are telling us to be chill and allow us to drink on our patios on the townhouses, and they hope that we don't exploit it and just drink anywhere?  Is this official policy?  Just real confusing because...seems weird I guess?  Can we brown bag our alcohol?

I guess what I'm saying is that the way they told us of this policy that 'Well we don't know what is in it, so we can't do anything' is really vague, and I would prefer that they just say something like...use an unmarked container and we can't say anything.  Are clear glasses okay, or do the containers need to be opaque?

Am I just looking too deeply into this?  Probably.  Regardless, roommate bought a 250 pack of solo cups.  <3 u roommates.

President's Happy Hour

In light of the recent announcement of the 'President's Open Hour', Dr. Jurgo has also revealed that he will be hosting a weekly 'President's Happy Hour' at the Door.

From 5-6 on Tuesdays Dr. Jurgo will host the happy hour at the Green Door, featuring a variety of Faulkner inspired drinks (since he loves Faulkner obviously).  Mint Juleps, Jack Daniels, and Southern Moonshine (note:  links explain Faulkner's penchant for the drinks).

As a result of this, SafeRide will now begin running on Tuesdays to accomodate the President's decision.

Ambulance

I was walking back to my room Friday night around the midnight hour and I saw an ambulance taking a kid away. Alcohol poisoning is depressing and sad and :[

Ways to avoid alcohol poisoning:
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Drink water before bed
  • Do not take shots of everclear
  • Jungle Juice is delicious but deceptively strong
Also apparently there was a fire alarm last night in LQ but I did not hear it at all and slept through it.
