Hallowgreens: When should it be ???

Recently some people have been tryna decide when Hallowgreens should be.  This is a difficult event/party to plan.  Even though ResLife/SMCM dictates when Hallowgreens is, every year people try to establish the date of the event via facebook events. 

People just don't understand that it literally gets decided during the summer by ResLife.  Any RA can confirm this.  When you get your RA duty schedule, it shows when Hallowgreens is.  ResLife, Public Safety, etc. all select this date so that they can plan accordingly to have enough staff on hand to handle the shitshow.

But people still don't understand this.

ANYWAYS this year, according to what I saw on facebook, someone made the event for October 27th.  This is the date the school chose for the event, and the date that makes the most sense.  Since it's in October.  Some people, like "DJ" Darren Leu believed that that it should be on November 3rd.

From my understanding, the logic was this.  Some 100~ students who compete in Fall Division III (the last division) sports have to play sports on Sunday October 28th.  So, they cannot get blackout drunk at Hallowgreens because it would impede their performance the next day.

1.  Hallowgreens is still legitimately fun and much more memorable completely sober
2.  Having played on a 'club sports' team (SMUT) we played every game hungover.  And we even won a trophy.

The point is, trying to change the date because a small minority cannot 'participate' is dumb.  It is as dumb as Paul Prazinski (I do not know how to spell that Pollack name) in 2010 (maybe 2009???) trying to push back the date of Hallowgreens because he and his 'bio' class would miss it due to a field trip.  Everyone told him that he was being stupid, and the date remained the same.

All in all, this resulted in a bunch of dumbasses (read: kids that are kinda clever and make me laugh a lot) making a new Hallowgreens event.  On December 29th.   https://www.facebook.com/events/157002124439597/

This sort of controversy will occur again in another two years.  One of the biggest issues at SMCM is the lack of 'institutional memory'.  It is the issue of 'remembering' what happened in past years.  Past efforts, past initiatives, past downfalls.  It happens at any college, and is incredibly hard to combat.  But it is something that both students and faculty/staff/administrators need to be mindful of.  The issue of the 'real date' of Hallowgreens are just minor example of the larger issue of a lack of institutional memory at St. Mary's.

SGA Meeting 4/6/2010

7:55 - Got here early. People are waiting outside, feel like it's for assassins.

8:09 - Still need more senators to reach quorum.

8:10 - Meeting begins.

8:13 - Legislation making Ken Tai the President of the Student Investment Group.

8:14 - Girls Club Soccer Club.

8:16 - So I texted Ken Tai to come in for the vote on his becoming president of SIG, and he just awkwardly poked his head in and I shook my head no. He was too late :[.

8:19 - Voting on the club, it will probably pass. Wonder if anyone will vote against it. Ohh it was unanimous, excellent.

8:21 - Spirit Week bill. Dingle had an idea to have Spirit week, which should be a lot of fun. I goddam love Spirit Week.

Monday: Beach day! I do this a lot of days, I love wearing swim suits! Also a cookout at the waterfront. Grilling Club will help! I LOVE GRILLING CLUB!

Tuesday: Professional Day! Dress classy or like a professor! I will be dressing like my favorite profession, lifeguard! That is swim suits two days in a row!

Wednesday: Class shirt/SMCM shirts! I will wear my ARC Lifeguard shirt! Lifeguards!

Thursday: Jersey/team spirit day! Guess I can't dress like a lifeguard on this day. Prob wear SMUT jersey.

Friday: Haiti day! How depressing :[ . Wear red and royal blue (aka lifeguard colors). Charity bike race/ride, awesome.

Logistics: Gonna cost 2,200$! Radical!

8:51 - So Cameron L. just messaged me asking when SGA ended, probably related to assassins. He's already killed several. Someone may die soon.

8:56 - Dean Bayless is commenting on the heat still being on. It sucks but they need to wait until the temperature is for sure going to be hot for awhile, cause like this weekend it's gonna be 60s probably. Kinda sucks but whatever, it's no one's fault really. Library is still intolerable.

Bald Eagle on Campus

Been seeing a 'bald' eagle on campus lately. Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand bald eagles like to fight seagulls (long term readers may know how much I fucking hate seagulls with every fibre of my being) and they are pretty and they are an American icon. But on the other hand there are really no negatives to this so I don't know why I wrote it like there would be a negative. Not gonna erase it. Fuck editing.

Saw it Friday morning around 7:30 on the way to class circling LQ. As an LQ senator, if this bald eagle tries to attack us I will destroy it and its terrorism. Some SMUT friends said they saw it on North Fields, and another friend said she saw it attacking a seagull (woot).

What do yall think about 'bald' eagles

• Do they represent the very ethos of St. Mary's?
• What is an ethos?
• Do bald eagles get drunk?
• Would you rather our national bird be the bald eagle or the delicious turkey via Ben Franklin

World Carnival

World Carnival happened weeks ago, but I never talked about it.  It occurred April 17-18, and it was the 16th World Carnival.  

My friend Ben Casto and I woke up early Saturday Morning (at like 6AM) to head over to Admissions Field to help set up and get a free shirt.  They said they would provide us with breakfast, which turned out to be really lame.  Like I wish they had just given us bagels or something.

We spent most of the 7-9AM tying balloons to stuff with Tricia Realbuto, which was awesome.  We became expert ballooners.  After this we went and got real breakfast.

I headed over to World Carnival later that day, and noticed some balloons were missing.  Apparently we weren't that good at tying balloons.  Anyway, there was lots of cool stuff.  I got a "KEN" henna tattoo which was awesome so that I can remember my name, and I also won a goldfish which I named Jeremy Pevner.  

I also tried out all of the inflatable things.  The lasertag was best.  I played with Ben and some people from SMUT.  It was a lot of fun until it started deflating, and we didn't realize it, and we almost died.  It was the most traumatic experience of my life.  I now have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder :[

And Carbon Leaf was really sweet.

SGA Meeting 3/10/09

There was no meeting last week. Lame!

8:08 - Meeting has started.

8:10 - The SMUT caucus has formed. There are currently four St. Mary's Ultimate Team members in the SGA, and they all sit next to each other. It is very cute.

8:11 - Student speakout. Peter Black is talking. I think he is really annoying, but he is bringing up a good point, that the ARC hours are getting cut, and that this is really lame. Here is the facebook group he made.

8:15 - Danny Patrick Thomas Ruthenberg-Marshall is talking about the removal of the "pillow"/mound of dirt near Schaefer and Monty, and that he is kinda upset about it. It is great to see that he is taking the initiative to talk to the administrators about this whole project.

8:18 - Economics Club Constitution. They are changing some stuff, it doesn't really matter.

8:19 - Matt Fafoutis made some legislation about thanking the Physical Plant staff for cleaning up the snow. Awesome! John Campbell and I motioned to vote at the same time, and then we exchanged angry glares.

8:21 - Emergency Funds Appeals. These are really boring I hope they don't last long.

8:23 - Jesse Lee is flexing. I have an erection.

8:31 - Resolution to have this program where someone drives a van to DC one weekend per month. I have mixed feelings. I think I will listen to what other people say, and take their position on the issue.

8:45 - Excecutive board reports.

8:58 - Iben Ricket just mentioned the possibility of a slip n slide. I am excited.

Block Party!

The Residence Halls on the Hill (Prince George, Caroline, and Dorchester) hosted a block party yesterday afternoon. It was pretty excellent. There was pumpkin carving, food, Hawk Radio, beer goggles, and most important of all

Free Shirts. It was the blue ones from Monday.

Highlights:
-I was carving my pumpkin, which said SMUT SLUT, and Dean Bayless walked over to see what it said, and I carefully covered the SLUT portion. Very awkwards
-Jesse Lee, Adam K., and the French kid in my Chinese class cooked food. They ran out of veggie burgers really early on so I ended up not being vegetarian for a half hour, since I wanted food and the Great Room closed early. Also they didn't have condiments until the very end :[
-A first year yelled "fuck you" at someone during the contest to win a "super sober safe sex shirt"; it was really awkward and weird. And somehow Karina remembered all of the alcohol awareness events from the week.
-Chris Rodkey and I made caramel apples. They were delicious
