SGA Election 2012

SGA Elections!~  Lots of stuffs.

Reighart/White VS. Perkins/Thor.

IDK much about any of the candidates other than Becky.  Becky and I had a fake wedding once (with real cake) so that was fun, she was a pretty good fake wife, but maybe not as good as this one. Also Becky was Senator of the year her first year in the Senate, which is actually a major accomplishment and shows real dedication to the SGA and the ability to create actual legislation that isn't bullshit.

And she was a major driving force for GMSRF (The green St. Mary's revolving loan fund, which funds green initiatives on campus) along with other stuff like reusable to-go boxes.  And I don't mean she just went to meetings and signed stuff, but she actually did a lot of legitimate work on these things.

So that is my experience with one of the candidates, but it doesn't really affect me obv so make your decision, just be sure to vote.

New Constitution!  Some "facts," but first it would appear that President Snyder is trying to remove necessary information from the Constitution!  Sounds like terrorism.

  • Cleanup - IDK I guess some stuff got removed so that it isn't a jumbled mess
  • Removal of MHEC from Exec board.  Not really sure why, or where/how the MHEC representative will interact with the student body, but w/e.  Most people tuned out when the MHEC rep spoke anywayz
  • Director of Campus Programming is now selected by the President+Staff instead of being voted on by the Student Body.  President Snyder wants to remove our ability to vote!  Sounds like terrorism to me.  I thought we fought the Revolutionary War so that we would be able to vote!  Is Mark Snyder a colonial governor, appointed by King George III??? He does live in New England...
  • Actually the above is probably a good change, although probably not a necessary one tbh.  It's never a contested position and the Prez and VP generally find someone that they want to run anyway.  So IDK.
  • MAT students can vote now.  This was attempted a few years ago but not enough people voted.
There are some other changes that President Snyder didn't mention on the Constitution fbook page for some reason
  • The President now serves as the Head of the Student Life Committee.  I don't really understand the need for this change, it seems weird.  I wonder what the rationale was behind this.
  • Removed the ability of the President to call special sessions.  This was never really used, not sure why to remove it though.
  • Removed having the VP solicit committees report to the Senate monthly.  I think Prez Snyder really reduced the amount of reporting at meetings, which cuts down on time.

The funny thing about getting new Constitutions passed is that they usually fail due to lack of voting.  So really the best way to vote against the Constitution when there is an uncontested election is to just not vote (via people are less likely to vote).

Wonder if the new Constitution will pass.

Anyway, go vote yall (or don't idc).

PANIC: SGA CRISIS???

Been hearing rumblings of people 'debating' at SGA meetings lately.  Not really sure what it is about via never going to them (anymore...sigh) so I talked to some informants to garner some information.

It seems there are two issues that 'people' are having with the SGA.
  • President Mark Snyder over break wrote up a new constitution over Winter Break (with limited input from the SGA?) which
    1. removes the MHEC (Maryland Higher Education Council) Representative position.  Without discussing it with the current MHEC Rep...
    2. changes the requirements for running for President/Vice President of the SGA that they must be on campus in the Spring Semester if they want to run.
Both of the proposed changes must be voted on of course before the changes go into effect.

RE:  Issue 1:  Apparently (via unsubstantiated rumors [via I didn't go]) the current MHEC-bro Mike Hullett did not know that there was this proposed change until the meeting and got upset and had the SGA table (AKA make everyone wait ANOTHER week to vote on it) the measure. Not really sure why he wants to get rid of the position, or discussed it with the current dude regarding whether or not we should have it.

RE:  Issue 2:  Some speculation that this is via he does not support the White/Reighart ticket, and did this out of spite (via they are currently abroad, but this would not affect them).  Not all that likely via I don't think he is that silly/childish.  Other more reasonable reason behind it is probably that he feels that the new Prez should be trained.  Regarding Mark Snyder and training, from an anonymous SGA member:  "also, if mark is so concerned about training maybe he should have trained his senate" via the lack of legislation (srsly they need more legislation like this wonderful piece of legislation regarding All Capital Letter Emails).

One anonymous bro said on this issue "I think many talented student leaders who have put in their time at SMCM and took advantage of its great study abroad offerings should not be penalized for going abroad the semester before their term would start. The student body should not have to be managed in this way, we should be trusted enough to give power to any student leader, even those who have decided to study abroad for a semester. We know who can represent us well and those who run for this office take it seriously. Extra regulation like this is completely unnecessary and rather offensive when it seeks to possibly limit the chance of a qualified, well-intentioned student leader to lead the school if the student body so wishes it."

IDK Blog-readers.  What do yall think?  Are people taking SGA too srlsy???

SGA Meeting 11/10/09

SGA Meeting. There are so many dirty hippies here, I don't know why. They are exciting me. This is glorious.

8:10 - Meeting is starting!

8:15 - blah blah blah

8:16 - Chancellor's Point Club thing. I read the Constitution but I don't get it. But I think this is why the hippies are here. I think it's about environmental learning and doing stuff or something. Apparently Chancellor's point is that point to the left of the Point. I guess this is cool.

8:22 - We are voting. It passed! Hippies are leaving now, I will miss them.

8:23 - Mark Snyder is presenting his bill which is about having a van that would drive to DC one weekend a month. Pretty coolio I guess.

8:29 - blah blah blah

8:46 - blah blah blah to the maxxxxxxx

8:55 - blah blah blah we are finally done talking about this. Postponing taking any action on this

9:04 - Meeting is wrapping up

9:11 - Meeting was kinda boring, and I am sleepy

9:16 - Adam Matthai just said that he is tryna get RedBox on campus. Fuck yessssss. They have one at UMD and it's cool

9:18 - Meeting over

SGA Meeting 10/27/09

SGA whatup. Starting soon I hope

8:06 - Haven't started yet

8:07 - Startinggg. Mark Snyder is not here he is sick or somesuch

8:10 - George Waggoner is here to talk to us! He is in charge of CTSS, the technology thing. He is telling us that people responding to spam are messing shit up. Stop responding to spam campus! Like all those emails that ask you for your password and stuff, don't respond to those.

8:19 - Lol he just admitted that they don't go after people with routers, even though they are not allowed according to To The Point.

8:28 - Danny is here to talk about SafeRide. According to him people stopped going to Oasis due to townies hitting people on the heads with bottles. So they are attempting to make it a college night maybe (wednesday).

8:31 - Resolution stating that SGA does not condone graffiti. Cool. No shit SGA doesn't condone graffiti, what the fuck is the point of this. The only good point is apologizing to Physical Plant on behalf of the people who did this.

8:36 - It's really cold in here!

8:47 - Blah blah blah

8:52 - Another resolution, this one about thanking Bon Appetit staff and physical plant and Public Safety for doing a good job. Woooo

9:03 - Funding stuff blah blah blah

9:10 - Idea to raise student fees since they haven't been for awhile. These fund clubs and stuff.

9:16 - It is really fucking cold I can't deal with this, my fingers are starting to get numb and typing is becoming harder.

9:18 - Justin Perry just mentioned the possibility of an ad-hoc committee. Probably because he is obsessed with ad-hoc committees.

9:22 - O shit Harry Potter this weekend whatup!

9:27 - blah blah blah

9:50 - meeting over

Brendan Larrabee is UnAmerican

Earlier today, Brendan Larrabee threw a pen at Mark Snyder, severely wounding him. We feel that he should resign as Senator because of this scandal.

Please do not throw pens.

(That is in fact the wound, and not Mark cutting himself with a razor)

SGA Meeting 10/13/09

Lets play the game where you tell Mark Snyder that there is an SGA meeting tonight when really there isn't one. Maybe he will read this before 8 tonight, or maybe someone will read it and tell him.

Anyway no SGA Tonight

SGA Meeting 10/9/09

8:05 - Meeting has begun

8:06 - Mark Snyder isn't here, what an ass

8:12 - Dean Bayless is here to talk about the Strategic Plan.

8:13 - Holy shit this is turning into a clusterfuck

8:25 - This is the most annoying SGA meeting I have been to as people keep asking stupid questions. Also I really need to pee, but I feel like since we are voting on stuff it would be bad to leave to go pee.

8:39 - The kid behind me keeps complaining about how long it is taking which is the most annoying part.

8:41 - Danny Ruthenberg Marshall is telling me where it is best to pee when camping (answer is rocks).

8:42 - Dean Bayless just mentioned a bassoon and I looked it up, and it is fucking awesome looking.

8:45 - Dean Bayless totally just called a Senator out for totally not paying attention lol.

9:14 - blah blah blah

9:16 - Dean Bayless just said we're almost done, and someone said "That's what she said". LOL

9:23 - We are halfway done, and will continue next week.

9:30 - Resolution that Public Safety should tell people that their car got towed. Passed duh

9:46 - People are debating how long the dryers should run for. This is literally the stupidest shit I have ever heard I fucking hate SGA right now. Hurf Durf if your dryer doesn't dry all your clothes in one go then it has too many goddam clothes in it.

9:50 - Shola just tried to leave out the door but fell and everyone laughed.

9:50 - There was a fire that burnt down a barn and all the chickens in it :[ So PS is trying to stop fires all around.

9:57 - People have been hating on the grilling club a lot this meeting and it makes me sad :[

10:11 - Meeting over whatup

SGA Meeting 9/29

SGA meeting with new Senators, cool

8:03 - O man meeting started early

8:04 - Swearing in of new senators. Mark Snyder was late and walked in during the swearing in and I loled.

8:07 - Senator Smith and Senator Agatstein just walked in late, what losersss

8:08 - Dean Bayless has a cool necklace

8:09 - Margo Williams, president of Student Investment Group is here. She is talking about stuff.

8:12 - Dean Bayless is here to talk about the Strategic Plan! She just established that she is taking notes on her blackberry, and not just texting friends. I hope it is both because texting during SGA is fun.

8:15 - Strategic plan is still boring and I still don't like hearing about it. But it seems like there are more concrete things in it now, so it's less boring I guess.

8:21 - I read it some more and it is a lot more concrete and is no longer boring. Congratulations Strategic Planning Committee.

8:26 - New Bill, spend 1,000$ on three picnic benches on The Greens. Sounds cool as I like picnic benches a lot.

8:34 - There is this kid here and he is asking too many questions that are stupid and annoying

8:36 - Cool it passed. In a few weeks there are gonna be some picnic benches on the Greens.

8:40 - Officer reports, blah blah blah

8:51 - My butt really itches and I am uncomfortable

8:56 - That annoying kid is complaining the Caroline doesn't have a piano. I hate Caroline and I hate pianos.

9:04 - Meeting over
