Church Point: Closed After Dark?

There has recently been some discussion as to whether or not the Point is off limit after dark, mostly as a result of the Class of 2011 Seven Wonders Tour.  During this year's tour a couch was burned (despite pleas from Jamie Phillips) which resulted in a nearby tree catching on fire.  The reason that the fire was so dangerous was, in my opinion, less because of the couch burning but mostly because of the location.  In recent years the Point has been eroding and the water levels in the Chesapeake were very high in May and June, which forced the bonfire to be held on a small patch of sand very close to the trees.  Obviously this could have been avoided if the couch hadn't been burned, but if there had been more sand it probably would have been okay.

Anyway, this was obviously a horrible situation and pissed everyone off.

I attended Alumni Weekend a month or so ago and had a great time, but I talked to some people who said that they were trying to hang out at the Point on Friday and Saturday night but were forced away by Public Safety.  A week later I heard similar things from others so I decided to ask the new Director of Public Safety Dave Zylak about it.

According to an email from Zylak Church Point is not closed after dark, and the Public Safety officers reported that they had not been asking anyone to leave.

CONFLICTING REPORTS!

So, either people were lying about being told to leave the Point (unlikely), Public Safety officers were lying about what they were doing (possible but unlikely), or real police were telling people to leave (unlikely).

So, we may never have a full understanding of what happened, but we do have confirmation from the Director of Public Safety that the Point is not closed after hours (unless if you are tryna camp there or damage the property or litter).  This may clear things up.

Class of 2013 Shirts

The class of 2013 (inferior to class of 2011 obv.) is selling T-Shirts with Dr. Urgo on them.  They look like this.

These look pretty rad!  The yellow is kinda weird though, it reminds me of both pee and 1970s nostalgia, two things which I dislike.  Also he should have a hat maybe via hats are great.

They cost $13 dollars which is an unlucky number so possibly you should avoid buying these.  But if you don't believe in LUCK then you can probably buy one via Joe Santangelo.  Email him.

Also, not really sure what 'el presidente' means.  I think it may be in a foreign language but I cannot read it so I believe this may cause the shirt to have limited appeal.

I also imagine that if I found this in a thrift store and didn't understand the context I would think it was teh greatest thing ever.

New Class of 2011 Shirts

New Class of 2011 shirts are available to order!  For 12$ you can have one of these radtastic shirts.

You may remember our other class shirts, along the lines of 'on a scale of 1 to 10, we're an 11'.  These are different obviously, and I think I like them more.

Tehehe I love jokes about STIs!  You may also remember that the class of 2008 (or maybe 2009???) used a similar joke for their shirts.  Something along the lines of 'I got my crabs at St. Mary's'.  But it's a fun joke, and pretty relevant since we had our crab feast at Jurgo's house.

I think I'll probably buy one.  They are 12$.

Fall 2011 Classes

Went on portal today (because roommates told me that we all got 25$ credited to our accounts for some reason...not sure why but probably gonna spend it on more swag at the school store) and saw that there is a link for tentative Fall 2011 classes...feel like they are trying to taunt me and the fact that I will be graduated by then.  Is there a way they can not put that on there?

They should have it just not show up for seniors.  :[

Public Safety Clery Report

Public Safety recently released their annual Clery report, which I don't know much about other than that it has lots of cool statistics.  Interesting excerpt from the part of the report that discussed Public Safety policies.
"The Director of Public Safety regularly reviews police logs and reports from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to monitor off-campus student behavior and refers those reports to both the Dean of Students and the Office of Student Conduct."
Interesting, thoughts?
Incidents can also be reported via a confidential “Silent Witness” web form.”  They used via, which makes me happy.
Interesting data from the report:
No homicide, yay!
Liquor law violations are going down.  2007 – 179, 2008 – 122, 2009 – 102.  Clearly my class (which came here in 2007) was the best/most caught drinkers.

Class of 2011 Crab Feast

Crab Feast!  30$ at Jurgo's house.  Benefit's the Class of 2011, which still needs to raise a lot of money.  Was thinking about not going because it's a bit more expensive than in years past, but Dad said he would buy my ticket (via all the parents got letters about this).  Real cool that the President is hosting this at his house.  Hope he has pets we can play with.  Wonder if we get to use his bathroom.  Kinda want to invite him to my house (via Harrington 3) for family dinner.  Menu would be something like

  • Chili (oh my god, roommate Mike Tornabene made Chili the other night, so good) and rice, with tortillas if desired
  • A light pasta side
  • Some greenery (aka bag of salad and celery added in)
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Carlo Rossi Wine (only the finest)

500 POSTS

I have literally made 500 entries into the SMCM LOL BLOG. This is absurd. I will now tell yall the history of this...'bloggerything'

It was the summer of 2007. Bush was still our President (RIP [j/k]) and I was not a girl, but not yet a woman. College was looming. I was stalking the Class of 2011 SMCM Facebook group, looking for potential 'friends'.

I came across Kt Zawodny. She appeared to be a 'lesbian' due to her haircut (she isn't, I have proof), and we had a mutual friend or two, so she seemed like an ideal choice. I friended her and we began talking about smoothies at one point. Also she once called me at like 3AM during the summer asking for directions around Baltimore. Good times.

Flash forward to Fall of 2007. There has been an armed assault/thieving (half the school knows what I'm talking about, the other half has no idea) near historic. I am in Kt's room and we are making smoothies.

Flash forward a week. We are in the Campus Center getting smoothies. We eat them, they are delicious. We decide to start a blog wherein we review all of the smoothies that the Daily Grind offers. You can find that blog here, it was called 'Blending Buddies'.

So we did that for about a month and then gave up as you can see.

Flash forward to the summer after Freshman year. Bryan Miller, Ben Casto, and myself are best friends. We spend the summer hanging out, drinking, tanning, and shaving our legs. At one point I am bored and decide to start a blog about SMCM. Originally I kept my identity a secret, but then I gave up on that.

The first post I made at college was talking about how I will be live-blogging the SGA meetings in the future. Here is a link to the very first SGA live-blog. Feel like I'm going down memory lane. Actually don't bother reading this, I sound like an asshole dickface at times.

Anyway, thank you to all my readers, I really appreciate it. Some people I would like to thank
  • Dean Bayless and Kelly Smolinsky for telling me to stop being an asshole on this blog (dunno if I actually took their advice)
  • People who have graduated/transferred but still read
  • Anna Kasicky
  • Kt for getting me started on this
  • Loyal Readers
  • People like Kristina who told all their friends about this
  • Catherine Skinner for support and love
  • Other people that I have forgotten
I <3 us all!

Class of 2011 Meeting

I went to the Class of 2011 Meeting that was held tonight. Apparently I am the first person to ever attend one of their meetings. This is kinda depressing really. The meeting was about 10 minutes and they kept asking me questions about my opinions on what they were doing. It was creepy at first, but I can see where they were coming from and it was just cute after awhile :3

Also I somewhat feel bad that I have a 2010 shirt but not the 2011 shirt. Also 2009 shirt sucks. I hope that 2012 makes an awesome shirt.

Speaking of shirts, the week of November 15thish I think they are planning to be selling shirts in the campus center, and then have a "wear you shirt" day. Exciting stuff!

So, if you aren't busy you should go to one of their meetings so that they are less depressed. It's every few Mondays at 8.
