PANIC: Railing at the Campus Center Missing

PANIC! The railing leading up to the Campus Center is missing! Who could have stolen it? Someone who hates the elderly, disabled, and people who need railings?

huh well at least with this missing railing there is now a sweet cup/beer holder outside the campus center, conveniently located in the ground

Kinda disappointed to see Chip Jackson's presidency (idk I guess that is over already?) going in the direction of removing hand rails. #disappointed

PANIC: Ron Paul Flyers on Campus

Took a stroll around campus today and saw an interesting sight:  RON PAUL POSTERS.  I don't really like Ron Paul.  I would go as far as saying that I dislike Paul more than Romney, but not as much as I dislike Santorum.  Reagan of course I dislike more than all of them combined.  Anyway here are a few pictures of the photos thanks to Katie Caffey and Shannon V.

What was kinda troubling is that some students were tearing down the posters at the Campus Center.  Like I said, I greatly dislike Ron Paul (except for his ability to deliver babies, which is cute) but tearing down posters is shitty for a number of reasons:

• Someone took the time to put up that poster
• Taking down a poster because you disagree with it is shitty
• Taking down a poster of a differing political ideology is shitty
• It's shitty

It's not part of the St. Mary's Way to tear down someone's posters.  Tearing down someone's posters is not engaging in Civil Discourse.  If you want to express your opinion, make a poster about why Ron Paul is horrible (via racism, wants to cut government spending for poor people, is a libertarian, etc.) and put that next to these.  Tearing down someone's poster that you disagree with just makes you look like you can't handle other people's opinions and want to oppress their ideas.  I am sure that Republicans on campus already feel ostracized, and this is just making that worse.

Am I right or am I way off here?

Gum Tree

I was browsing the twitterverse the other day (@SMCMLOL) and noticed some rumblings about a 'gum tree'  I wasn't really sure what a gum tree was so I did some INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM on the subject and some GONZO JOURNALISM via taking photos of this elusive tree.

I scoured my sources as to where I could find this tree.  After tweeting a few of my followers they left me with one clue:  the path to the Campus Center.  I slowly made my way towards the pond, it was a cold day.  Suddenly I looked to my left, and there it was.

A colorful tree, with fucking gum on it.  Why the hell is there a tree with gum on it?  This is the weirdest thing I have ever heard of.  But apparently it's thing in Philadelphia, and now it's a thing here via cultural appropriation.  The Philly Gum Tree was a tree on South Street in Philly that had gum on it.  Then in 2008 it got cut down for some reason.  I think that pretty much sums it up.

Oh man look at all that gum!  So, I am judging this attempt at a tradition, but I bet that when people started throwing shoes up in the Shoe Tree in the year (whenever that happened) people probably thought it was dumb.  And to be honest I still think this is dumb because it is littering and I don't like littering, but whatever.  But it's kinda cool and different, and I guess I can't fault someone for trying something new.

Also I don't like gum and literally don't understand the appeal of gum.  Why not just eat food.

PANIC: Tapestries Removed From Campus Store

PANIC!! It would appear that the tapestries have been removed from the Campus Center Store.  These essential tapestries have been replaced with INSTRUMENTS.

I think we can all agree that while music is an essential part of the college life (via student bands [Three Man River Band, that ska band that played once and I wish would play more, Byzantine Top 40, Hydrofish, Slyfoxed] and that guy who shows up to parties with a guitar and kinda annoys everyone) tapestries are much more important.

Where would we be if everyone did not have a Bob Marley or Grateful Dead tapestry?  I know that my townhouse last year had both, along with approximately five other tapestries (not at all a joke).  How are we supposed to have the generic college experience if we are deprived of our stereotypical tapestries???

Granted, I may be jumping to conclusions, and they may have tapestries somewhere else in the Campus Store, but WHO KNOWS (via I am not good at investigative journalism when I live several miles away).

EXCLUSIVE: New Campaign Focusing on Student Identity

The other day I was in the Campus Center tryna get some swipes and I saw this awe-inspiring sight:

I was very confused via I did not think that I was in a Sears Photo Center (via 1990s nostalgia for suburbia).  A young lady who was not at all ugly asked me to pose and said that she remembered me as being "very photogenic" which I think was a compliment or something, and then she took my photo!

After that chillbro Garrett Zopfi asked me to write down how I identify myself, so I wrote down "I am cool".  Not sure if I did that correctly or w/e but he seemed satisfied enough that he told me about the project.  They are making posters with photos of SMCM students and how they identify themselves and putting them around campus or something.  Something along those lines, not really interested in getting the actual story via lack of journalistic integrity, rather more interested in making assumptions etc.  Maybe he will see this and give the full story via comments.

Bike Shops should get this

This is an awesome thing and would be radical to have outside the bike shop/campus center.  A quick bike repair station, with tools for nuts and bolts and most importantly a pump!  Also I wouldn't feel awkward going to the bike shop just for air in my tires.

Campus Fire Safety Month

September is Campus Fire Safety Month!  My idol, Polly Miller, will be in the campus center with information all week.  You can also sign up for fire-extinguisher training.  She also mentioned something about getting hosed down by firemen...this sounds exciting/erotic.  Glorious.

Really though yall, try not to cause any fires that could result in stuff burning down.

500 POSTS

I have literally made 500 entries into the SMCM LOL BLOG. This is absurd. I will now tell yall the history of this...'bloggerything'

It was the summer of 2007. Bush was still our President (RIP [j/k]) and I was not a girl, but not yet a woman. College was looming. I was stalking the Class of 2011 SMCM Facebook group, looking for potential 'friends'.

I came across Kt Zawodny. She appeared to be a 'lesbian' due to her haircut (she isn't, I have proof), and we had a mutual friend or two, so she seemed like an ideal choice. I friended her and we began talking about smoothies at one point. Also she once called me at like 3AM during the summer asking for directions around Baltimore. Good times.

Flash forward to Fall of 2007. There has been an armed assault/thieving (half the school knows what I'm talking about, the other half has no idea) near historic. I am in Kt's room and we are making smoothies.

Flash forward a week. We are in the Campus Center getting smoothies. We eat them, they are delicious. We decide to start a blog wherein we review all of the smoothies that the Daily Grind offers. You can find that blog here, it was called 'Blending Buddies'.

So we did that for about a month and then gave up as you can see.

Flash forward to the summer after Freshman year. Bryan Miller, Ben Casto, and myself are best friends. We spend the summer hanging out, drinking, tanning, and shaving our legs. At one point I am bored and decide to start a blog about SMCM. Originally I kept my identity a secret, but then I gave up on that.

The first post I made at college was talking about how I will be live-blogging the SGA meetings in the future. Here is a link to the very first SGA live-blog. Feel like I'm going down memory lane. Actually don't bother reading this, I sound like an asshole dickface at times.

Campus Center Lounge

In one of the campus center lounges alone, the one with fireplace and air hockey. Some old people just walked in. They are speaking a different language. Maybe French? Kinda German sounding. I think they just said 'yoga'.

Never really experienced people speaking a different language very often in my life to be honest. Went to the DC/National Zoo over Winter Break and there were a lot of people speaking different languages, which was really cool.

They seem very nice.

Plastic Bags

Last Year the Daily Grind and the Campus Store stopped buying plastic bags and decided to start reusing donated plastic bags, as well as encouraging people to bring their own bags. This was a pretty cool idea, and they are continuing it this year.

In addition, if you bring 10 bags you'll get a 10% discount on school clothing (I'm pretty sure most all of it), which is a cool discount (but really you should wait til the end of semester 20%ish discounts).

Also really everyone should try to just bring their own bags or backpacks with them when buying stuff, cause reusing plastic bags is kinda disgusting.

Campus Center Renovations

The Campus Center Balcony and Stairs are getting renovated! This is pretty awesome because the stairs are really stained and disgusting from spilled food, vomit, piss, and hopefully semen as well. Hopefully it will all look a lot nicer now.

Integrated Pest Management

Just got an email about an Integrated Pest Management Meeting, Wednesday at 2:45 on the Campus Center Lawn. This sounds really exciting but I can't go due to class.

In the email they mention two animals that they are going to introduce: Purple Marten, and Bat houses.

I emailed Kevin Mercer about Purple Martens, because I had no idea what they were. According to him they are "a type of bird that eats lot of (pest) bugs that could cause damage to our landscape on campus". He didn't even tell me what they look like! So I decided to google image the bird. Apparently they are purple in the sense that a Raven is purple, that you have to look at like ten of them to see one that is actually purple.
It's kinda cute I guess.

Okay but more importantly, BAT HOUSES. Why do they think this is a good idea? It's common knowledge that Bats are vampires and will turn people into vampires. And Wesley Snipes is out in California, so I don't know how Blade is going to save us from vampires. We already had several zombies infestations on this campus, and I believe that an outbreak of vampirism would decimate the campus.

And it's going to be multiple bat houses, which means multiple rival vampire clans, who will fight each other on campus. This is bad because it will be like having gang fights and terf wars, except that the gangs will be vampires and it will be at night when we are sleeping.

In conclusion, I intend to protest this whole bat house thing. And with the protest rules being revoked, I can do it without filling out paperwork woo!
