Senior Gala/College Prom Omnibus Guide!

Senior Gala (AKA College Prom) is coming up soon! A magical night of dancing and drinking with your fellow students and professors. It's a pretty pricey event though, so here is a guide to sneaking in, as I did circa 2010:

How to sneak into Gala

• Don't arrive early, and make sure it is dark outside! That way when people with flashlights try to follow and apprehend you, it will be more difficult and you can escape
• Don't try to go through the main entrance. walk around the whole perimeter until you find a quiet area to sneak into
• Act confident
• If you are worried that the people behind you with flashlights are trying to kick you out, just keep walking and blend in with the crowd
• Dress fancy
• Pregame to the extent that you are comfortable with sneaking into a $70 event, but no so much that you will be stumbling around

Just when is Gala? The date and location has changed over the years, let's look at a quick recap

• 2010 - At the Brome Howard Inn, starting around 8PM?
• 2011 -  At the Brome Howard Inn, starting around 8PM going until 12AM (idk I bought a lot of those lil' drink tickets)
• 2012 - The location changes to Maggie O'Brien's house, time remains the same. Location probably changed because Brome Howard Inn employees didn't feel like cleaning up until 4AM. Nearby residents complained about a large bacchanalia occurring on a Thursday night, so this location was not used again
• 2013 - Back to the Brome Howard, but now it starts earlier? 7-11 so that there is more clean up time.

IDK how accurate that is, but for staff and professors the Gala goes until the next morning apparently #typos

What to do at Gala

• Get a plate full of shrimp, walk over to a log overlooking the river, and proceed to spend half an hour eating shrimp by yourself
• Dance with Bob Paul
• Take a limo there
• Confess your affections to First Year crushes
• Dance
• Drink
• Cry over the fact that you graduate in 36 hours

Hands in Pockets

I like how his hands are in her pockets. I think this is a good strategy because a hand in the pocket is not only comfortable (pockets are made for hands to be put in) but you also avoid any awkward hand placement (breasts, vaginer, butt, etc.) if they aren't into that/think you are scary.

Issue: most dresses don't have pockets.

Solution: Bring some pockets with you while out dancing. During a song change, quickly sew the new pocket onto your partners dress. Note: you may not get your pocket back, so keep a good supply of pockets.

Issue: hands in other people's pockets may not be socially acceptable even though it's 2010.

Solution: Tell them you are a psych/soci/compsci major and that this is an experiment.

This was from awhile ago but I forgot to post it.

Spring Formal

There is a Spring Formal this Saturday.  A few emails have been sent out about it recently, but they have made me sad for one important reason....

They are no longer advertising the event as a part of the Tolkein Society and Anthro club!  This was the sole reason I wanted to attend!  Usually dances and such are held by groups like Dance Club or BSU and other groups, but never by incredibly nerdy and academic clubs!

I am overly excited for this event because of that reason, but it makes me sad that they have compromised their values and stopped advertising who is sponsoring it.

Either way I think it will be nice to have a classy dance event, and it should be pretty radtastic.  I think I will swing by to see what kind of music they are playing.  I hope their event is a success!

More Dance Show and Dance Party

I ended up going to see the Dance Show again Friday night because my friend had an extra ticket. I think my favorites were before and after the intermission, with "Question" choreographed by Catherine Meringolo, and Marshall Betz's "Boys vs. Girls". Question was the dance with all the street clothes dancers, and the song contained a lot of real world noises. The song itself was very experimental and I was excited to see it in a dance performance. Boys vs. Girls was a fun and upbeat pairs dance, the kind of dance everyone can appreciate and get into. Overall I was really impressed with the Dance Show as a whole.

After Saturday's show the Dance Club hosted a dance party in DPC. I went over with some friends around 10:30 and no one was there. We danced for one song and then ran away until 11 or so when people actually showed up. I think it was pretty fun, but I wasn't a big fan of the music. I don't think there was enough variety, and far too few of those songs that everyone recognizes. I still really enjoyed it though.
